Abstract: One of the major challenges facing mental health professionals today is developing an understanding of the complex role that cultural diversity and difference plays when working with clients from different cultural backgrounds.

If we are to practice ethically, competently and effectively, culturally sensitive counsellors need to be mindful of how our dominant cultural values and training may be interpreted during our interactions with clients.   As each of us comes from a unique blend of cultures and identities, all counselling and supervision interactions could be seen as multicultural events. Working effectively with cultural diversity is good ethical practice.

The Bears

Our brains are good at telling stories using the information stored within them from events of our past. As children we develop many stories from how we felt in any given situation. Often our storage system is limited in the many intricacies of dealing with people and we may be triggered by certain situations. In fact, our emotions determine the meaning of everything. How do we unpack these stories in order to expand our files into a more an accurate understanding of ourselves within the dynamics of relationships?

Through this interactive workshop, Rob will show how the use of his ‘working bears’ can help our clients to have a deeper understanding of themselves and how they can develop healthier ways of relating, not only to others, but with their inner child – the emotional self. The concept of the Bears is based in Transactional Analysis, Gestalt Therapy and the work of both John Bradshaw and Lucia Capacchione.
