Remote Multi-Cultural Supervision via Skype and WebChat
Abstract: One of the major challenges facing mental health professionals today is developing an understanding of the complex role that cultural diversity and difference plays when working with clients from different cultural backgrounds.
If we are to practice ethically, competently and effectively, culturally sensitive counsellors need to be mindful of how our dominant cultural values and training may be interpreted during our interactions with clients. As each of us comes from a unique blend of cultures and identities, all counselling and supervision interactions could be seen as multicultural events. Working effectively with cultural diversity is good ethical practice.
Practioners are increasingly being asked to consider how they may incorporate expanding technology in the delivery of service to clients
Along with developing multicultural competency counsellors and psychotherapists today have a wider range of avenues available to deliver counselling and supervision. Practioners need to develop the skills and practices necessary to facilitate a meaningful therapeutic relationship online.
Presenter: Lyndy is a Counsellor in private practice. She is currently piloting a supervision practice online to a group of Chinese national social workers and psychotherapists via an interpreter. Lyndy will be presenting on her experiences with development of her trial practice so far, outlining the important steps she has discovered that are needed to achieve sessional and client satisfaction.
