Nathanael Reuss

Master of Counselling Practice | Associate Minister | Specialist in Religious Trauma and Spiritual Abuse

Nathanael Reuss is a Christian counsellor and associate minister with over two decades of experience supporting individuals through faith, psychological insight, and compassionate care. Currently practicing at Pivot Counselling in Adelaide, Nathanael brings a unique integration of theological depth and clinical counselling expertise to his work with clients navigating complex trauma, spiritual abuse, and faith-related challenges.

Professional Background

With a Master of Counselling Practice from Tabor College and an MA in Theology of Mission and Ministry from St John's College, Nottingham, Nathanael offers a rare combination of clinical training and theological understanding. He holds professional memberships with the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA), and the Christian Counsellors Association of Australia (CCAA), and is currently completing his Certified Clinical Trauma Professional Level II certification in Complex Trauma through Janina Fisher's specialized training program.

Nathanael's professional journey spans pastoral ministry roles across Australia and the United Kingdom, including hospital chaplaincy at Launceston General Hospital, parish leadership, and associate ministry at St Bartholomew's, Adelaide. This diverse experience has given him profound insight into the intersection of faith, suffering, and healing.

Areas of Specialization

Nathanael has developed particular expertise in religious trauma and spiritual abuse, pioneering research into trauma-informed theological approaches to healing. His groundbreaking work includes the development of the SABAL Method, a Christian (Kenotic) spiritual intervention for Religious Complex Trauma survivors, and extensive research exploring Christ-centered approaches to religious trauma recovery. He regularly presents professional development workshops on topics including "When Faith Wounds: Understanding Spiritual Abuse and Religious Trauma" and "Developments in Trauma Theology."

Teaching and Leadership

As an adjunct lecturer in Counselling Skills at Tabor College, Nathanael is committed to training the next generation of Christian counsellors and pastoral caregivers. His teaching draws from both academic rigor and real-world pastoral experience, equipping students to navigate the complex landscape of faith-informed counselling with clinical competence and theological integrity.

Philosophy of Care

Nathanael's approach to counselling is grounded in the belief that healing happens at the intersection of spiritual/psychological insight and the therapeutic relationship, which is built on safety and trust. Drawing from trauma-informed practices, theological reflection, and a deep respect for each person's unique journey, he creates a safe, non-judgmental space where clients can explore their stories, process their pain, and discover pathways toward restoration and growth.
