Never before has so much been expected from relationships in general — for partners to be emotional soul-mates, faithful sexual partners, perfect parents, and unwavering allies through life’s many storms. And never before have so many relationships crumbled under the weight of such heavy expectations. So when couples seek our help, we can’t just sit back and let them rehash their repeated conflicts styles and bring out the worst in each other.
This workshop aims to provide more insight into the complex world of Emotional Attunement within relationships (not just romantic) as a fundamental social skill which describes our ability to fully process and move on from negative emotional events that can ultimately, if navigated well, create stronger relationships. Bowlby’s Attachment theory together with the longitudinal studies conducted by couples researcher John Gottman have shown how emotional attunement can down regulate negative effects, help clients grasp their unhealthy conflict style then find positive ways forward and interrupt their destructive cycles. This presentation will look at a detailed intervention devised to cultivate new insights and attunement helping couples and individuals connect, respectfully through self and other awareness. The framework offered can assist laying a foundation to support developing emotional attunement where it’s missing that will help carry relationships through difficult times.
Supported by Gottman’s research, this workshop will explore the following:
  • Understanding how we build and maintain a relationship
  • With increase knowledge build trust neurologically through attunement
  • Deeper knowledge of how interpersonal interaction develop intimate trust or distrust
  • Identify key elements of constructive & destructive conflict styles
  • Explore the power of unexpressed expectations
  • A road map to encourage your clients to cultivate emotional attunement
  • How to increase clients confidence is managing the inevitable struggles in life.
