Emotionally focused Therapy for Couples (EFT) was developed in Canada in the 1980’s by Susan Johnson and Leslie Greenberg and is recognised as an empirically validated approach to couples’ therapy. In this presentation, the EFT model will be presented with examples of key interventions and change events. A segment of therapy will be shown, and questions will be welcomed.
This approach is based on attachment theory which honours the importance for all of us to have close, safe relationships with at least a few important people. The research in recent decades in adult attachment has provided much useful understanding that informs our work as therapists dealing with couple conflict, alienation and emotional injuries. Our approach to the distress of our couples is Rogerian, with emphasis on therapists’ empathy and validation, and belief that all clients have potential to grow. As a Christian therapist I find this approach to my work as a Clinical Psychologist consistent with my personal values.
