I am a well-qualified clinical counsellor with twenty plus years of counselling experience. I have been a Christian for about the same length of time. I have worked for NGOs like Lifeline and CatholicCare, and have done repeated stints of private practice work in Curtin, ACT.
Faith integration has been a part of my practice since joining the CCAA in 2019 and especially attaining Clinical Counsellor status a few years after that. As well as being open to discussing issues of faith, I am increasingly interested in how positive psychology and the Church’s understanding of virtues overlap, and in the way neuroscientific evidence points to the effectiveness of devotional practices involving prayer, contemplation, gratitude, humility, obedience, forgiveness, and acceptance.
I also believe that CBT can be very compatible with faith because it encourages self-responsibility and doing what is needed for effective change. At the same time, I acknowledge the great importance of a trust-filled counselling relationship. I have worked successfully with grief, loss, trauma, anger issues, insufficient self-control, depression, and many kinds of anxiety.
