The Use of Art as a Clinical Tool

in Therapy

This Practical workshop will:

  • Define Art Therapy and its therapeutic application
  • Outline a basic process for working with drawings/art
  • Demonstrate the use of art as a diagnostic toolInvestigate the neurobiology around the use of art as a way of resolving and storing traumatic memory
  • Provide practical examples of exercises which can be used with broad populations
  • Provide experiential opportunities to 'play' with the media
Presented by:  Julie Nixon  (Dip Teach., M. Couns., PhD in progress)

Julie is Senior Lecturer in Counselling, Excelsia College, Sydney. Julie counsels, teaches and researches in the field of trauma. She has a Certificate in Art Therapy from the College for Educational and Clinical Art Therapy. She also has had long experience in working with both young people and adults using expressive therapies

Please bring a set of oil pastels (reasonable quality – mid range) to use at the workshop. They are a worthwhile investment should you wish to explore more frequently the use of art in therapy.  Retailers, such as BigW and Officeworks sell a range of these  Oil_Pastels.jpg
