My initial research (PhD) was in “religious” experiences, perhaps better phrased as the type of experience that some would call “religious”. They are the types of experience that are usually “one-off” and then never forgotten, but not often revealed to others. Some psychologists might classify them as “psychotic experiences” although for each person they are very real. Experiences such as hearing voices, tactile experiences, synchronicity, the out-of-body type feeling that I am observing myself and the unifying experience that “all things are one” and that I am part of a larger whole are some examples.

It was natural that this work on deeper human experiences led on to study to become a Diplomate and Faculty Member of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy (USA) and a member of the Viktor Frankl Institute (Vienna). I then completed a PsyD in the approach to psychology advocated by Viktor Frankl. I am an Honorary Fellow of Australian Catholic University and an adjunct Senior Lecturer at University of Southern Queensland.

I now teach the Advanced Course in Logotherapy, open to all with an interest in Viktor Frankl and his work. It is endorsed by the Psychotherapists and Counsellors Federation of Australia as a specialist training for registered counsellors. The course is offered online and face to face and boasts graduates worldwide. I teach the same course on behalf of the Viktor Frankl Institute of which I am a faculty member.

This PD will focus on Viktor Frankl’s approach to psychology, which recognises the human spirit as fundamental to change. I will use client examples to teach the basic principles of Frankl’s approach to therapy.
