Recording – Presenter: Dr Michael Brautigam (5 hours – Category B)

Building a Theological Foundation for the Counselling Room

In this workshop, Michael’s aim was to to assist professional Christian counsellors by providing them with a sound theological basis for understanding mental health concerns. The workshop is divided into two main parts,
A) Theology & Mental Health: In the first part, we will focus on anthropological foundations at the intersection of theology and psychology, Theology & Wellbeing, Flourishing in Tensions and Questions of Suffering.
B) Doing Theology in the Counselling Setting:  The second part will deal with aspects of effective self-regulation, insights from history (e.g. Martin Luther’s approach to soul care), Theology & Therapy. Participants will be enabled to apply their theological understanding to the professional counselling practice. It will enable them to reflect upon their existing theological framework for understanding mental health concerns and modify this as necessary in light of biblically informed theological principles, with a view to application in the counselling room.
