Drs John & Julie Gottman are world leading researchers and practitioners in the field of couples’ relationship therapy. Drawing upon over 45 years of research with over 3000 couples, they have identified the factors that lead to relationship breakdown and relationship long term stability. Their Gottman Institute extensively trains practitioners in the development of interventions that have been carefully evaluated.

Much of the Gottman method compliments the wisdom of the Scriptures and is helpful for both Christian clients seeking healthy marriages and Christian therapists seeking therapeutic approaches consistent with their faith. Their research has debunked many cultural myths about successful relationships – for example, society often believes spouses must passionately vent all their anger and frustration to each other during conflict, whereas the Gottman research has highlighted the importance of gentleness when expressing one’s perspective which is consistent with Scriptural principles: speak the truth in love; the fruit of the Spirit is gentleness.

In this workshop, Robyn will outline how she practises Gottman couples’ therapy and how to apply this approach according to the world view of Christian therapists and clients. Consideration will be given to overcoming common barriers experienced by Christian clients in accessing this method of couples therapy. The presentation will also include the approach taken by Christians who are influential within the Gottman Institute. Current research will be discussed, along with practical interventions for couples’ relationship therapy and education.

This presentation is relevant for practitioners who are very familiar with the Gottman model and also for practitioners with no familiarity with their approach.
